Service
- 2024–now: I am representing the Dutch NGO Algorithm Audit as a representative in CEN/CENELEC JTC21 WG3 and contributing to the development of a harmonized standard for AI Bias Assessment and Mitigation, implementing the EU’s AI Act.
- 2022–now: I am a co-organizer of the FAIMI initiative (and MICCAI SIG) for the fairness of AI in medical image analysis. In this capacity, I have co-organized several highly successful workshops and am currently co-editing a MELBA special issue.
- I am occasionally consulting for journalists and companies on AI topics (both general/technical and with a particular focus on ethics/fairness), such as for this excellent investigative reporting case study.
- I have been reviewing extensively for many different venues for years, including MICCAI, NeurIPS, ICLR, AISTATS, AAAI, CVPR, ML4H, and others. I take pride in (I hope) always providing thorough and constructive reviews.

- 2024: I was awarded the Bernd-Fischer-award for the best STEM Ph.D. thesis at Lübeck University.
- 2023: I was a highlighted reviewer at the NeurIPS XAI In Action Workshop.
- 2022: My Ph.D. thesis was awarded the highest grade (summa cum laude).
- 2020 award for patient safety in medical engineering by the German association for biomedical technology (DGBMT) and the Aktionsbündnis Patientensicherheit (APS), 2nd place. (For our work on surface EMG-based monitoring of respiratory effort, specifically these two papers: [1], [2].)
